Emotional Soulfly
Music Babylon

Everyone experiences his own attitude toward music. One needs it for self-affirmation, one to express emotions. Thus, Brazilian heavy metal singer Max Cavalera, who started the Soulfly in 1997 after his decision to leave the Sepultura, employs it as a heeling therapy, aiding solution of all human problems. As well as leaving one of the world’s most popular heavy metal band Sepultura, which he organized together with his brother, he had to deal with the unsolved murder of his stepson and best friend Dana Wells.

Max claims this period of time to be the most harrowing and complicated emotionally in his life. He was close to a nervous break up. The most popular music critics shared his fears too. However, Max Cavalera didn’t give up, he possessed enough emotions to express his convictions and establish the Soulfly band in 1997. He promptly came up with the bands name, as the only thing he lacked in by that time was just a small soul fly.

1998 saw release of their first self-titled CD album Soulfly, which reached number 82 on the Billboard 200. Max Cavalera managed to found the band "with the idea of combined sounds and spiritual beliefs." Their art meshed folklore, metal and sincere lyrics.

In 200 the Soulfly released the second CD album Primitive. The album featured a heavy amount of popular bands, including the Slipknot, Deftones and Shone Lennon, a son of John Lennon. It didn’t please all the band’s fans, however, was the band’s most successful CD album and reached number 32 in the Billboard 200.

The third album, released in 2002, served as a genuine emotional protest against the war in Iraq, containing anti-military lyrics and a one-minute break pause to pay the tribute of homage to those, who died in actions. Another album Prophecy, released in 2004 was peculiar of combination of exotic folk themes and rhythmic hardcore. It looks like the Soulfly follows a tendency of keeping to a 2 year’s break in releasing their albums. To believe the predictions the 5th CD album will be released in 2006.
