Nowadays two things are selling hot cakes in the American market one is tickets for the movie The Da Vinci Code and polarized sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses are specially designed to absorb the reflective solar glare appearing from flat surfaces such as water, snow, and highways. These sunglasses absorb up to 97% of the glares. They are not restricted to fashion accessory but they are also a safety device used by navigators, water sportsmen, skiers, and drivers.

Gleaming water and immaculate white snow can sometime create a tremendous reflective glare from the sunlight incident on it. Same goes with the long road stretches. However, the iris in our eye has a natural mechanism of becoming narrow and blocking light, but sometime it is impossible to block such bright glares.

Polarized lenses were invented by Edwin H. Land in 1936. Polarized sunglasses polarize the light, and make the light vibrate only in one direction. Normally, surfaces producing glares have horizontal polarized light. Thus, sunglasses are fabricated with vertical polarization to block the incident light and reduce glares.

Polarized lenses are made of a synthetic plastic known as CR-39 or polycarbonate. Genuine polarized sunglasses are very expensive than ordinary sunglasses. Many shops sell cheap polarized sunglasses that are nothing but mere replicas of the originals. However, a genuine polarized lens can be tested by rotating it in a particular direction and also seeing if the glare through the lens changes in its intensity on rotation. A fake sunglass may in fact damage eyesight.

Polarized sunglasses are best for people suffering from eye disorders of long-distance vision such as hypermetropia and presbyopia. But there are assured limitations associated with polarized sunglasses. People wearing polarized sunglasses may not be able to notice certain relief features on snow, as it blocks several of the light rays reflecting from it. This may prove dangerous in the thin ice. Another factor is that they make LCDs almost invisible from certain angles as LCDs are also polarized light.

Due to their specialized technology and features, polarized sunglasses are priced higher. The cheaper ones are available for $75 and but the price may go up to $300 depending on their brand names.
