Yet every couple of years we’re reminded that we actually do get to vote for the people who will lead the nation. Contemplating our returning power, we start to feel a strength even greater than we get from voting with the almighty dollar. Our growing cynicism gives way to hopes for improvement. And we realize once again that our most important vote really is who we vote for as the captain and officers of the good ship America. Once we go to the polls, we can slip back down to the passenger compartment and go about our daily lives. And soon we’re bound to lament once again that what goes on in Washington, as well as our state and city governments, is pretty much beyond our control. The redeeming thought is, just when we have enough time to grow really cynical all over again, the time returns once again for us to vote with something more significant than greenbacks.
